Required answers and validation
Make a question required, and set lengths, number ranges, decimal places, date ranges, selection counts and text patterns.

Every rule is checked twice: in the respondent's browser as they answer, and again on the server when they submit, so nobody can skip it.
Required
Turn on Required at the top of a question's settings. New questions are required, except long text. Contact info sets required per field, and a payment is always required.
Rules by question type

| Short text | Min characters, Max characters (up to 5,000) and Validation: Letters only, Digits only, Letters and numbers, or Custom pattern, with your own Error message. |
| Long text | Min characters and Max characters (up to 20,000). |
| Number | Min, Max and Decimal places: Any, Whole numbers only, or up to 1–4. |
| Multiple choice (several answers) | At least and At most selections. |
| Date | Earliest and Latest date. |
| File upload | Accepted types, Max size (up to 100 MB) and Max files (up to 10). |
| Matrix | When required, every row needs an answer. |
| Email, phone, website | Checked for a valid address, number or URL automatically. |
Custom patterns
Custom pattern takes a regular expression the whole answer must match, such as [A-Z]{2}[0-9]{6} for two capitals and six digits. If the pattern isn't valid, the builder says so and it isn't checked.
